The core in an XGS-PON network plays a central role in the management and forwarding of data. Here are five essential tasks:
Bandwidth management:
The core ensures efficient allocation of available bandwidth and ensures that data is distributed evenly across the network as required.
Connection of OLT and ONT:
The core mediates between the Optical Line Termination (OLT) and the Optical Network Terminals (ONT) that connect the user's end devices.
Data forwarding and routing:
It ensures the forwarding of data packets between the local network and the Internet, using routing protocols to choose the best connection.
Error handling and diagnostics:
The core continuously monitors the network and detects errors or faults to enable quick diagnoses and solutions.
Security management:
The Core handles network security management, protecting against unauthorized access and ensuring that all connections comply with applicable security protocols.

The Optical Line Termination (OLT) is a central component in an XGS-PON network and performs important tasks for managing and controlling the entire system. Here are five essential tasks of the OLT:
Signal conversion:
The OLT converts the electrical signals from the end systems into optical signals and sends them to the ONTs (Optical Network Terminals) via the fiber optic link.
Bandwidth management:
It controls the allocation of bandwidth between the connected ONTs to ensure efficient use of the network
Connection and synchronization:
The OLT ensures that all ONTs in the network are synchronized and correctly connected to the network, and provides communication control between devices.
Data forwarding:
It handles the routing of data traffic between the optical access network and the core network, including the forwarding of data to the Internet or private networks
Error monitoring and management:
The OLT monitors the health of the network and detects problems such as signal loss or interference to enable rapid fault diagnosis and rectification.

The Optical Network Unit (ONU) or Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is an essential component of an XGS-PON network and represents the interface between the optical network and the end devices. Here are five essential tasks of an ONU/ONT:
Signal conversion:
The ONU/ONT receives optical signals from the OLT, converts them into electrical signals and forwards them to the terminal devices, such as routers or computers.
Communication management:
It manages the communication between the end user and the OLT, including control over the data transmission rate and time window.
Processing of data traffic:
The ONU/ONT receives and processes data packets, both incoming and outgoing, ensuring smooth communication between the end device and the network.
Error detection and error transmission:
It continuously monitors the network connection, detects errors or faults and sends this information to the OLT for troubleshooting.
Network security:
The ONU/ONT ensures that communication between the end device and the network is secure by supporting encryption and other security protocols.
